RFK Stadium
Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium has been one of Washington's best sports venues since it opened in 1961. The stadium was originally used to house both the National Football League's Washington Redskins and Major League Baseball's Washington Senators. However, the 56,000-seat stadium has also proven ideal for concerts and other major events.
Baseball and football were the major attractions at RFK for many years, but both teams eventually found new homes. However, the stadium continued to be used regularly and quickly became known as one of the best soccer venues in the country.
RFK Stadium has hosted many World Cup qualifiers, international friendlies, World Cup Finals games in 1994, and Olympic matches in 1996. That year also saw D.C. United claim RFK as their home ground in the inaugural Major League Soccer season.
With the stadium's beautiful natural grass field and United's ample and vocal crowd support, RFK Stadium soon became known as one of the toughest places to play in MLS. RFK Stadium has hosted two MLS Cups including the 1997 match that saw United capture its second consecutive championship before an overflow crowd of more than 57,000 people. In 2002, RFK hosted its first MLS All-Star match, with United's own Marco Etcheverry taking home MVP honors on his home field.
RFK Stadium is proud to be the home for D.C. and American soccer fans, and its legacy continues to get stronger thanks to the support of the D.C. area's loyal soccer enthusiasts. D.C. United encourages you to come out to RFK and see the best soccer in the country in one of the most stories stadiums in our land.
