This is a community that has a large Arabic populace. That being the case there are numerable venues to experience a little bit of Arabic culture. An example of this is the Arabic American Museum on Michigan Avenue across from the court house. This establishment traces the Arabic American's background and explains how the majority of the populace immigrated when the Henry Ford Motor Plant was established.
There are various restaurants featuring mainly Lebanese cuisine. One of the most popular is La Shish which has the best salad in the area in my opinion. I always order the lemon shish tawook. Hamido's has a very good boneless chicken with a type of barbeque sauce marinade. The most popular pastry shop is Shatila's which carries phyllo pastries, homemade ice creams, cakes, and small french type pastries. At most of the restaurants you can order an agayle which is a device used to smoke flavored tobacco. I don't like to smoke or the smell of cigarettes but I do like the agayle. It's available in various fruit or rose flavored tobacco. If you're not sure what an agayle is, then try to remember Alice in Wonderland, the caterpillar who was sitting on the mushroom was smoking one of these.
If you're a cook or just like fresh produce, then you'd love to shop at Greenland's. There's two of them on Warren Avenue. It's a supermarket that has fabulous prices on fresh vegetables and fruits. The best day of the week to shop there is on Wednesdays which is the day of the cheapest prices. However, the prices generally beat Kroger's, Meijer's and Famer Jack's everyday of the weak on fresh produce. |
