I definitely want to make this an event. And I'm going to go too! I kayaked around Dallas once but I forget where we went.

I am in! I just kayaked for the first time last weekend in Austin. We have been to Beaver's Bend twice already, so another location might be more interesting. How about that place in NM?

I think I will organize something for Pilars NM. It's a town south of Taos about 21 miles. It's a guided river tour. You can go in a huge raft with a guide or go guided in an inflatable kayak. It can be quite intimidating when you are one of 3 kayakers in a group of 40 and they are in the big rafts. But trust me, you will love it...it's safe and you will never want to get in a lame texas river again after doing a class III. My photos in my profile show me doing the Pilars race course.
Plus we can party in Taos, or get a B&B in Taos. I know some great cabins/cottages . They have a casino nearby as well.

Sounds awesome. What month were you planning on doing it?

I'm researching it now. I'll let you know. Best time is when the river is 750 to 900 cubic ft per second. More volume means higher water, above rocks. not as fun. --more rocks to highside makes better rapids at a lower cu. ft. It's usually 1400-1500 during early spring as the snows melt down off the valleys and mountains.

We'll do the Pilars in funyaks. Inflatables. Easy to maneuver and very responsive. Much like a Dagger stub nose.

Well, we need to discuss this as a group somewhere some evening. We need to make a decision. The river is currently at 1,240 cubic feet per second. That's fast and Class IV to V rapids, not safe in a funyak. The river has to be below 800 Cu. ft. per second for Class III kayaking. I just called the outriggers and they said it's still snowing in the mountains so the runoff may increase to 1800 by the close of July. So now we get to decide if we want to do a kick ass Whitewater trip, which I will gladly do if Jason buys the first round post the rafting trip. I may be parched by then.

Kelly, have you done whitewater before? No experience is required, but always helpful when deciding what to bring on a trip of this caliber. Usually 1-3 6 packs will do it, but it helps to plan ahead. =)
