I noticed that the YAP branch in Austin has a lot of Kayaking trips and I was wondering if you guys around this area make any kayaking plans?

Hi Tom, there was discussion about a year ago for a group to get together and for those that haven't done it before we were going to go somewhere we could get started and learn.

What/where do you suggest someone woud get started.  It looks like a ton of fun.  I love canoes.  I don't know how my strength would be, but I'm always up to try something new.

I've got a true city kayak that I don't take out much and would like to.  Seriously, it has foot pedals if you don't want to row!  It's still fun and a great workout.  I've been wanting to do Grapevine if anyone's interested.  I did White Rock once and it was truly disgusting!!

In my opinion Kayaking is much easier and more fun than canoeing (and less chance of you falling in). So if any one is remotely interested they should defiantly try it out. REI in Dallas (and now in Plano) offers a wide selection of Kayaks to rent with all of accessories if you dont want to spend the money to buy one (although even if you are planning to buy one you should defiantly consider renting a few to get a feel for which type you like).

As for where to get started, REI offers FREE "Introduction To Kayaking" classes every once in a while. I think they will start again when the weather gets worm and I know the instructor at the Dallas store so if we have enough people interested we can maybe work something out with him.

As for what lake to go to, as Gabriella mentioned the water at White Rock lake is pretty nasty but if you are not planning to get crazy and jump in the water I think its the best place to start as the lake is pretty small so the water is usually calm and they do a pretty good job of keeping the lake clean unless you go the day after a big rain storm then as Gabriella put it "is truly disgusting". Also they have a semi sandy area where its kayak friendly for put ins.  There are few more lakes around the area but the water quality is about the same unless we have enough people to make a few hour road trip to a clear water lake close to Dallas.

I think if we posted an even during the winter time there arent going to be a lot of people signing up but keep in touch and we will defiantly plan something in Spring.
