Richard,
I work in the Woodlands (way North) and when choosing a place to live I couldn't face a long commute every day from the central parts of town, so I chose Spring (North). I decided I'd prefer to travel a long way for recreation, rather than work. But for you it shouldn't take TOO long to get to the airport area if you were to live centrally. Plus you'd be going against the flow of traffic, which is always nice. As for specific areas, there are other people here could advise you better than I can.
