Donations are being collected at the Applebee's on Battleground Ave for the Jimmy V Foundation.
The fund raiser will run throughout the ACC and NCAA Men’s basketball tournaments (March 1st through April 6th)
Donations can be as low as a $1 or as much as you would like to give.
Here is some information on the V Foundation.
The V Foundation for Cancer Research…
· Was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano, legendary NC State basketball coach and ESPN commentator.
· Awards 100 percent of all direct donations and net proceeds of events directly to cancer research and related programs.
· Pays all operating expenses with the investment income from the Endowment Fund.
· Received a sixth consecutive top 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s premiere evaluator of charities. This places The V Foundation in the top three percent of all charities evaluated by the nation’s largest charity watchdog.
· Awards grants through a competitive process strictly supervised by a Scientific Advisory Board comprised of some of the nation’s top doctors and scientists.
· Is guided by an all-volunteer Board of Directors, comprised of top business leaders from around the country
· Has raised more than $80 million, used to fund cancer research grants nationwide.
· Has awarded grants to 92 institutions in 38 states and the District of Columbia.
· Awarded a $2 million grant to a ground-breaking collaboration between Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center and UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center for a studyto individualize treatment of breast cancer.
· Awarded 187 V Scholar grants since 1994 to promising young scientists nationwide, 93 percent of which have received additional funding and have established independent labs. An additional five percent are currently working in related research.
NORTH CAROLINA FACTS
Since 1994 The V Foundation has awarded $51 million in cancer research grants nationally and over $8 million in their home State of North Carolina. In just the past 3 years, The V Foundation has awarded $ 5,225,000 to the following:
· $2 million in Breast Cancer Research ($1 million to Duke and $1 million to UNC Lineberger)$600,000 for Genetic Research in Lung Cancer at Duke
· $325,000 in Pediatric Cancer Research at Duke
· $1.5 million partnership with the Lane Armstrong Foundation ($750,000 from Lance Armstrong Foundation and $750,000 from The V Foundation). This is to fund a Live Strong Center of Excellence at UNC Lineberger.
· $500,000 to Rex Cancer Center to create a Rex Prostate Cancer Center of Excellence
· $50,000 to First Health in Pinehurst for Prostate Cancer Screening and Awareness Program
· $1 million to fund The Jimmy V NC State University Cancer Therapeutics Training Program
