Hello Everyone,

I just accepted a job in Houston and will be moving down November 1st. I was hoping everyone could help me pick the right neighborhood. Currently, I am living in Washington DC. My neighborhood is full of young professionsals and is walking distance to most things (Stores, Bars, etc...). I am looking for something similiar, any ideas?

Thank you,

Matt

Welcome to Houston (a bit early!) !

I may be a bit biased when I say this but the inside the 610 loop is pretty much where EVERYTHING happens....

If you can find anything on Washington Ave, in West University, downtown, or Midtown, even the Galleria area are good places for people in their 20s/30s to live.

Though a lot may depend on what part of town you're working in....

If you need any more specific info feel free to ask, I've lived here most of my life and know just about everything about anything here. :)

Ali- I have to disagree with you.  Yes, alot of things happen inside the loop, but that is not the only neighborhood to live in.

Forewarning- Houston is nothing like DC.  There really aren't any areas where you walk around.  This is a city that lives in their cars.  Look for something close enough to work, because commuting here sucks!

If you're going to be working downtown, Rice Village or the Heights or the Museum District is nice- but get an apartment locator because those are higher crime areas and you want to make sure you move into a good complex.

I'm living in Katy right now, which is absolutely amazing to go home and relax at.  I'm about a 25-30 minute drive to the city, which is very reasonable on weekends that I feel like doing something in the city.

I live in clear lake, and if your looking for more family life than this is it...great in between Houston and the beach which is Galveston....Clear Creek School District (Outstanding).

Alison is right....more big city...Inner Loop

Katy is cool but its far away...its a suburb....

I would recommend you live in Midtown so you can get a feel for the area and meet new people in a buzzing area...where at least the bars are in actual walking distance...maybe the "Post Apartments" would be a great place to start!

Up and coming areas would be Washington Ave (The Heights...in the shadows of Downtown Houston)  and City Centre which is going towards West Houston & Katy...that is one of the newest major developments in Houston....

Also Upper Kirby....has a great scene..and will appeal to all your domestic and entertainment needs!

Houston is BIG...you can't go wrong anywhere really! I hope you find somewhere cool to call home!

Cheeers!

Matt, where were you at in DC?  I used to live in Alexandria and Fairfax and spend a lot of time in the District and Clarendon.

I'm thinking you will want to look for places off of Washington Ave or in Mid-Town.  Anything you look at will be affordable compared to what you've been paying out in DC.

Hi Matt,

Look into Midtown and Montrose, depending on your personal style and budget.  Midtown has reasonable apartment prices and plenty of bars in walking distance.  Montrose is an interesting and quirky kind of neighborhood.  It has a big gay scene, but lots of stuff for everyone else also.  I'm not sure about apartment availability and prices in that area though.

You could also try the Galleria area- it has tons of apartments, shopping and restaurants, but not as much nightlife. Unless you happen to work downtown then there's no reason to pay the high prices to live there.  There's not much going on there for young professionals.  And of course if you're going to work in our huge med center then that's the place to live to avoid a commute in all this traffic (that's what I do).

Midtown is my best reccomendation.  Here are some links that may help:

Midtown Official Website
Midtown Nightlife

Montrose

Galleria/Uptown Official I hope that helps!

Hey Adam,

I am living in Glover Park which is on Wisconsin Ave. Yes, I am looking forward to getting a better value for a place in Houston compared to DC. Thanks for the help.

Yeah bro, I'd look around Washington Ave, for sure.  It's close to Memorial Park, a good night life, and close to downtown and the Galleria.

I'm biased towards Midtown, because I've lived here for 5 years.  Love it...very close to Downtown, and easy to get to the Heights and the Galleria.   There are a lot of fun places within walking distance, but that depends on if it's not 10,000 degrees outside.  :)

Where will you be working, because that might change my opinion.    I actually work on the west side of town, but don't mind the drive because I'm central and usually my commute heads against traffic.

Good luck, and feel free to join us when you make it into town!
