Anybody been? When's a good time to go? I was thinking we could do a trip down there some time and rent a condo. Airfare should be cheap and those who really want to can drive (although I think it's way too far for that).

I've been to South Padre for both Spring Break and Summer.  Spring Break in March would be a LOT of fun, but 1) it's always COMPLETELY PACKED everywhere you go and 2) it tends to be cool/overcast and rain a lot in March, so there's a good chance that could cut into our beach time.

I would recommend going sometime in the summer, although the night life is somewhat slower.  Just brush up on your Spanish, as probably at least 50% of the people at Padre in the summer months are Mexican nationals; these are the well educated, very wealthy types from that country's elite class (many of the women are blond haired, blue eyed people beauties who don't speak English).

I went 2-3 summers in a row with group of 15-20 friends  and its was always a blast.  July 4th weekend seems to be the best time to go in the summer, although you have to plan several months ahead since it's extremely popular.  Any other time though is fine, the main rub is that most of the island's clubs will be closed (there's usually 2-3 open).  But you can always go across the border for cheap booze and/or party in your condo room.  The weather's almost always nicer (hot!) in the summer as well.

To drive straight through from Dallas, which is what our group always did, is about 10-12 hours.  I'm thinking that with the price of gas these days it would probably be cheaper to just fly down and rent a car while you're on the island.  There are also taxi's on the island.

I have been to padre with a big group before. we went on the forth of July. It was a lot of fun

we rented 2 condos which made it cheap. We actully drove down there. it was cool to have the car to drive around. some of us went shopping in Mexico. I would definitly go in the summer because the water would be warmer, and prices cheaper

Ok, I did some research on S. Padre.

I found a nice condo http://www.gulfviewi.com/ their prices for a 2 bedroom condo in the summer season is $500 for 3 nights and $900 for a week

If 4 people stay in a 2 bedroom condo the cost per person would be $125 for 3 nights and $220 for a week.

To drive down there it takes 9 hours

I would like to go and can do the legwork to set it up, if you guys are interested

I have always had really good luck renting condos from www.vrbo.com .  I've not used it for Texas before, but have for Florida, Alabama and Colorado.

www.vrbo.com looks like it has a lot of options. it seems like the prices for condos that sleep between 4 and 6 go from $650 to $2000 per week in the summer.

Location (relative to beach) seems to make a big difference.

when do you guys think would be a good time to go?

I personally like summer just because the water is warmer and you can swim

I agree to renting a condo.  I had a blast in Padre during spring break when I was in college.  That was then.  I went a few more times the past 3-4 years and I enjoyed Labor day.  There were more mature young active adults versus the typical college 24 and under crowd.  (no offense to our 21-24 year olds, but I'm NOT that age anymore, so I prefer a mixed variety of ages.

Padre is off the chain man. Lots of nice pretty women, and lots of entertainment. the times ive been is in the spring, during spring break time. It can get pretty crunk and crowded down there. Im from sa tex, it only takes about 3 1/2 hours to get there. i think i would fly this time and rent a car. that might be better, knowing how gas is and stuff. if u go for spring break be careful but have fun too man.
