San Antonio Nightlife

I'm not an expert on SA Nightlife, but thought I'd get the ball rolling here.

If you like a very upscale night (and expensive drinks), new ultra lounges Posh and Dolce may be for you. I haven't been to Dolce yet, but I've seen their website and it looks similar to Posh. Posh does not have a cover charge, or didn't the two times I was there. They do have a velvet rope and bouncers in suits. The place is smoke free, and is a beautiful space with luxurious furnishings and a flashy neon-lit bar. They play bumpin' house music and have flat-panel TVs around the club, which were showing a Cirque du Soleil movie on my last visit. The only dancing you'll get here is whatever you're brave enough to do where you're standing. They have a number of VIP lounge areas, I don't know what it costs to get one. I don't think they offer any drinks under $7, so be prepared to spend some money. They offer flavored mojitos, but apparently not after 9pm. And don't expect warm, friendly staff here, that's not the ambience they're going for at POSH.

If you're looking for a more laid-back, rowdy good time, HOWL AT THE MOON on the Riverwalk is a popular choice with locals and tourists alike. It's a dueling piano bar where you can hear old and new favorites, your school fight song, military anthems, and some bawdy tunes as well. Cover is $10 and you have to get there pretty darn early (maybe 8:00) if you want to be guaranteed a table. Otherwise, you just hover and wait to pounce when someone leaves. Sometimes you get lucky.... getting a table, I mean. You can do some dancing here if you're brave enough to get up in front of the audience. Otherwise, enjoy a good drink and sing at the top of your lungs with everyone else--even if you don't know all the words.

MARTINI'S on Rector behind North Star Mall is a fun place if you like live music in an old-Vegas-lounge kind of atmosphere. The owner, Wayner Harper, performs on weekends. Backed by a drummer and keyboardist, Wayne imitates Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and many others while playing everything from a banjo to a sax. You can request Neil Diamond, Elvis, Beach Boys, Pat Green etc., here; Wayne does it all. The drinks are a little pricey and the place can get pretty smoky. No cover charge here.
